Leveraging Design for Sustainability Across Product Development
by Kimi Ceridon
Implementing identifiable, quantifiable and measurable Design for Sustainability (DfS) metrics into a product’s design is not enough to product more sustainable products. These metrics must be tracked and managed throughout the product development process including design, manufacturing, sourcing, production, delivery and beyond. More sustainable product are the result of integrating a life cycle thinking approach throughout these processes and into extended manufacturer responsibilities.

FUELING PRODUCT INNOVATION THROUGH LCA
by Kimi Ceridon
Across many industries, companies find integrating life cycle thinking and sustainability as a way to facilitate product team innovations rather than limit them. With life cycle thinking, product teams are not limited to evaluating just the function of a product. They are free to examine every aspect of a product's life cycle starting at source of materials to the manufacturing processes, transportation, and ending with what happens at the end of the product's life.

GREEN DESIGN WITH LIFE CYCLE IN MIND
by Kimi Ceridon

It is not impossible to integrate sustainability into early stages of design. Cradle-to-grave environmental impact analysis methods are rarely used as a metric during product development. In early stages of a project, companies measure feasibility according to money, performance and time metrics. Sustainability is commonly measured at a design cycle’s end on finished products when design features cannot be easily modified for sustainability measures. It is ineffective to apply new design metrics to finished products.

CRYOCOOLER COLD ELECTROMAGNETIC VALVE DESIGN
by Kimi Ceridon
A major limitation of Gifford-McMahon, G-M, cryocoolers is the requirement to conduction cool the refrigeration load. A number of earlier attempts to use check valves to rectify the oscillating pressure from the G-M expansion in an external flow loop were unsuccessful because of valve leakage. A G-M cryocooler is being modified with the addition of Boreas style cold electromagnetic valves to utilize the oscillating pressure to drive the unidirectional flow in an external cooling loop.
