Workshops & Seminars
SUMMARY -
This workshop focuses on integrating techniques for evaluating sustainability with the product development and design process to provide participants practical tools for creating more sustainable designs, products and engineering applications. Companies continually measure project feasibility according to metrics such as cost, performance and time. On the other hand, sustainability performance metrics are commonly considered toward the end of the design process. Applying these metrics at this stage means they are not used to influence the design process or aid in design decisions. This results in sustainability metrics being used to determine 'greenest' design within a product line or for marketing purposes. This methodology does not create inherently sustainable designs; thus, promoting ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ as an element of marketing and not design. Engineering and design professionals are in a unique position to proliferate sustainability, through design of more sustainable products. Design for Sustainability (DfS) methodologies such as Life Cycle Thinking can be integrated into the design process from the start. These methodologies improve the ecological performance of products, without compromising technical performance, design or product features and capabilities. Perhaps most important to a company, DfS methodologies do not have to impact project cost or schedule. The goal of the Design for Sustainability workshop is to provide a set of practical tools for product development professionals, to implement sustainability metrics into the design process. The workshop provides the participants with a range of design strategies ranging from simple technical and analytical considerations during design decisions to collaboration with Life Cycle Assessment professionals to integrate and streamline their services with the product development process.
